Where Focus Goes, Energy Flows: Directing Your Attention During Life Transitions
For over a decade, I've encountered the wisdom that "what you focus on grows" and "where attention goes, energy flows." These statements have echoed through my life from countless sources, books, mentors, even fleeting images on various social platforms. Intellectually, I understood it. Yet, every now and then, especially during times of significant change, the embodiment of this truth sinks in just a little deeper.
You see, navigating the space between who you were and who you're becoming requires a special kind of awareness, an awakening to this principle. At first, it's an intellectual understanding. You grasp it logically, but it's still something outside of yourself. Over time, as you move through life's transitions, if you nurture this awareness, it transforms into an embodied experience. one that is uniquely yours. It's no longer just a concept; it becomes a way of being that guides you through life's inviting moments.
So, the question becomes: where are you focusing your energy during this transition in your life? Are you fixated on what you're losing, or are you directing your attention toward the possibilities emerging? Is your energy scattered on comparing your journey to others, or is it concentrated on growing, healing, and evolving through this in-between space?
Many people use the distractions of others' transitions as a way to avoid facing their own. But when we turn our energy inward and focus on the areas within ourselves that need attention during times of change, we begin to cultivate something powerful. This focused attention leads to meaningful transformation, integration, and the remembering of who we truly are beneath all the shifting circumstances.
It's about moving from an intellectual concept to an embodied practice, especially when everything feels in flux.
For example, if you constantly focus on the discomfort and uncertainty of your transition, you'll continue to experience more anxiety and resistance. But if you shift your attention to the growth opportunities, moments of clarity, and emerging possibilities, you'll start to notice these elements expanding in your experience. The energy you pour into your thoughts, feelings, and actions shapes how you navigate change. If you want to cultivate a different experience of your transition, ask yourself: is my attention on what's emerging, or am I stuck focusing on what I'm leaving behind?
The power of focused attention is easily underestimated, especially during life's in-between moments. Where you choose to direct your energy determines not just what grows in your external life, but how you experience these pivotal transitions internally. By consciously shifting your focus, you can transform periods of change from something merely to endure into opportunities for authentic alignment. So, take a moment to reflect, where is your focus during this transition, and what are you allowing to grow as you move between who you were and who you're becoming?
